Raven DeJesus 1-1 Discussion: Dismantling Cultural Perceptions Hello Everyone My name is Raven DeJesus. I work full-time as a paraprofessional with special needs children in District 75 public school. My major is anthropology. I don't have a favorite book, but I do have favorite genres: fantasy, dystopian, and romance. I enjoy playing video games or watching movies, especially when I have a stressful day. What I hope to gain from this class is what ethics in anthropology means and how I can apply it in my future career. A popular medium that stereotypically depicts natives is both the Lone Ranger series and film. Tonto, who is the lone ranger companion, is described as not well-educated in the English language. He is described as drunk or alcoholic; there were no actual cultural traits. However, indigenous people, in general, throughout the film and TV industries, are depicted as tomahawk-wearing savages who are going to kill white individuals and their families. This depiction promotes negative stereotypes because Indigenous people are viewed as backward savages who are violent, hateful, and uncivilized.
