Reintroduction of Tule Elk at Point Reyes Seashore National Park in the late 1970s was made as a recovery effort for this species. Answer the following questions: (see the reading on Tule Elk) a. What led to this effort? After the gold rush in California, the elk were hunted nearly to extinction. Their habitat was also converted for agriculture. In 1874, ranch workers found several of the elk that had not been seen for 4 years. The landowner protected them and the population rose to 140. The elk received official protection in 1971. b. Which population growth model would the species show from the late 1970s to the start of the 21 st century? Exponential c. What population factors would eventually play a role to keep the population below carrying capacity? Available land, food, and water. d. Tule Elk would be categorized as which “type-selected” species? Explain why? Type 1. They have a low mortality of young, have later reproduction, and have fewer young. e. Explain the characteristics of this species. Draw the survivorship curve which would best fit the Tule Elk and explain why? (NOTE: insert a picture of your drawing into this document or find an existing survivorship curve and insert with the proper citation). file:///Users/mollyhare/Downloads/TuleElk_Reading_F23.pdf
