When I hear the term feminism, I think of a movement that supports the idea of equal rights between men and women. Feminism challenges the cultural, political, and economic roles of women in society. Throughout history we seen women trying to make an impact and have a voice in society. During the Women's Suffrage era, women throughout the U.S fought to have the right to vote and have the same opportunity as men. This caused the 19th amendment to be signed into the Constitution and allowed women the right to vote. Even though we have progress since then, we still try to make changes in laws that impact women like abortions rights and equal pay. Growing up in an African Household, I was taught that a woman is expected to cater to the needs of her children and husband while managing a stable career. While I agree with the idea that women should be able to care for the home, I think it's also important for a man to do these duties as well so that his wife will not be carrying the barren alone. Many woman in my community are neglected of their rights. When someone is a victim of rape or has been sexually abused, they are left astray and our blamed for the assault. Some lawmakers don't hold the accused accountable for the action and set them free. This causes victims to left astray and unable to overcome the traumatic situation. I think it's important for Africans to more open minded to these incidents and try to protect the rights of rape victims. The idea of Feminism does not sit well in the minds of many Africans due the cultural and religious influence but I think stops women from being productive in society and having a voice. What I hope to take away from this class is a new understanding of feminism than my current understanding of the movement. I also hope to learn more about different cultures and societies and how feminism shapes the way they live their lives.
