Munoz 1 Nathan Munoz Professor Rosado Cultural Anthropology January 1, 2023 A Walk to Beautiful 1. In the film, Ayehu, one of the women, expresses surprise and even happiness that she is not the only person with this type of “sickness”. How can the feeling of isolation or community help to heal someone? Why is this so important? - Isolation tends to bring depression and a lack of self-worth. In this instance, Ayehu was even exiled from her home and her partner left with another woman. Going to the hospital and experiencing a sense of community gave her hopefulness. Having the help of different professionals and seeing other individuals going through the same thing made her feel less alone. Community is so important because it can help you to get through hard times. The mere presence of others sometimes is what people need to feel a little better about themselves. 2. There is a theme of child marriage and a lack of women’s choice in this film. What is cultural relativism? Why is it important for a cultural anthropologist to develop a cultural relativism outlook? Are there limits to cultural relativism? At what point should an anthropologist speak out or criticize a culture? Discuss this using examples from this semester. - Cultural relativism is the idea that each culture must be understood in terms of its values and beliefs. Cultural anthropologists need to develop a cultural outlook because they are there to absorb the culture. The anthropologist is there to study other ways of life and Culture. I think there are limits to cultural relativism. As I said in a previous assignment, we should provide aid when it is asked of us. I think a good example is the film A Walk to Beautiful. The help provided was so these women would be able to rejoin their villages.
Munoz 2 3. In both the film A Walk to Beautiful and the reading Leprosy on the Ganges, the stigmatization of a disease affected the cultural view of the illness and the people who had it. How did these cultural ideas affect an individual’s ability to receive treatment in each of these cases? What types of projects or plans could be implemented in order to minimize the stigma? - I think some of the projects that could be implemented are education about diseases and health. Charities to help financially with the operation and treatment or a program with medical and health professionals to provide services for free. 4. Using aspects of the readings assigned this week and examples from the lecture for this week, explain why applied anthropology is such an important tool for medical professionals. Why was the project designed and conducted by Patten so successful? - Applied anthropology is so important because these are the people living within the culture for some time. They know what diseases and health problems need priority attention and how to get the help they need. We say this on A Man Called Bee with the antibiotic, or A Walk to Beautiful when Ayehu was able to get the free treatment that she needed. I think that the project was a success because first, they did their research. They knew that they could not just give them the goats. They crossed breed them and made sure it was safe. And the villages were open to try it.
