How would you define culture? Do you agree with the idea that culture is learned? Explain.
I would define culture as the beliefs, patterns, and values of a group. Yes, I do agree with the idea that culture is learned. We are all brought up in different ways and are raised to believe things differently based on our culture. Our beliefs and opinions are affected by the culture we grow up in.

Explain the differences between the anthropological and popular views of culture presented in Ovando & Combs Chapter 5. The differences between the anthropological and popular views are that anthropological views can be inclined to make statements about the lower capacity that one group has compared to another. Popular views are views that have more of an interaction with that idea that one’s background influences their approach to certain things.

Explain Cultural transmission that is related to individuals growing up in a multicultural society. What are the challenges when considering the adaptation process of immigrant families?
Cultural transmission that is related to individuals growing up in a multicultural society is
the process that is passed from individual to individual based on social learning and interactions. There are many challenges that are dealt with based on the adaption process of immigrant families. Examples include not being able to change their beliefs and opinions taught or developed from their culture to fit society, and struggling with language barriers. 4.
Explain biculturalism, acculturation, and assimilation. How are they related?
Biculturalism is when a person has the capacity to negotiate effectively with two different
cultural systems. Acculturation is the adoption of the dominant group’s culture patterns by a new or oppressed group. Assimilation is the process by which groups adopt or change to the dominate culture. They are related by … 5.
Explain ethnocentrism and how it relates to prejudice and discrimination.
Ethnocentrism is the view that one’s cultural group is superior to all others. It relates to prejudice and discrimination by one culture rejecting another based on their beliefs. For example, one group can be demeaning to another because they believe that their culture and beliefs are “more correct” or “better.”

The key characteristics of culture are that it is a dynamic system, creative, continuous, learned, shared, and a struggle for survival.

Culture is manifested through clothing/decoration, housing, time orientation, spatial orientation, and values.

What is Multicultural Education?
Multicultural education is an educational concept where cultural diversity and equality is address in schools. The different races and ethnic groups that individuals are from are incorporated into the lessons and classrooms. It utilizes student knowledge of the world as a starting point and resource for learning where all students can benefit from it.

The connection between bilingual education and multicultural education is that they were
both developed separately, with separate journals, professional associations, and constituencies. They both utilize student knowledge of the world as a starting point and resource for learning, as well as provides an environment where all students can benefit from.

Culture and culture factors influence students’ educational outcomes by it being difficult to be perceived, language barriers, and even beliefs and opinions on things.

11. Explain the prevalent explanation for the achievement gap?
The prevalent explanation for the achievement gap refers to the persistent differences between the achievement of students of color and white students, generally measured through standardized tests. There are four different approaches to explain the achievement gap; which include genetic inferiority, cultural deficit, cultural mismatch, and interaction style.
12. Describe the why these explanations for the achievement gap are useful?
These explanations for the achievement gap are each useful in their own way. Genetic inferiority helps to assume that certain groups are inherently incapable of intellectual achievement. Culture deficit helps to suggest that ethnic minorities fail in school because their cultures are inadequate in one way or another. Cultural mismatch helps to suggest that members of a minority group fails because the characteristics of their culture are incongruent with those of the mainstream group and the school system.
13. Explain why the cultural mismatch does not answer the question about differential achievement? 2
Cultural mismatch does not answer the question about differential achievement because the view is oversimplified and causes superiority of a dominant group.
14. Explain the cultural deficit theory?
The cultural deficit theory suggests that ethnic minorities fail in school because their cultures are inadequate in some way. These aspects that make them inadequate also makes it difficult for them to meet the standards of the culture that is more dominant. 15. Explain how teachers can support the academic achievement of students of color and students from marginalized groups. Teachers can support the academic achievement of students of color and students from marginalized groups by getting to know them more and engage in active care. Also, holding high expectations for their students and providing support so the students can meet their expectations will also help.
