Aanu Grewal ARTH 2060 Indigenous Arts of the Americas December 20 th , 2021 Response 10 1. How did Ciel Caudle’s presentation inform your sense of Indigenous and Black relationality in the Americas, and in the Caribbean in particular? Select three points from her presentation to illustrate what you learned. During Ciel Caudle’s presentation informed my sense of Indigenous and black relationality in the Americas and in the Caribbean in a large way through multiple points made during the presentation. One of the most important pieces of information I had learned was the large number of indigenous people’s living in the Caribbean before ever being in contact with European countries with many of the different indigenous communities living in various communities throughout the Caribbean which is something I had never learned even during history classes in high school. Something that Ciel had mentioned during her presentation really stood out to me that had directly addressed rationality was “relationships and how you relate to land and how you relate to people, those are all individual and those are all neurons”. Ciel had mentioned that many individuals may feel different about this especially when she had talked about the Maroons as a part of the indigenous populations within the Caribbean. One take away from the entirety of the presentation was that there is a sense of gratitude as many Caribbean countries engage in a sort of fierce nationalism being a different source of nationalism than around the country of Canada as that would have a political undertone however as someone from the Caribbean specifically Grenada, they are often speaking about
emancipation from slavery and therefore, the bravery, skill, etc. of the indigenous peoples in Grenada is very admired. Overall, my main take away from this presentation talking about relationality which concerns the way in which two or more people/things are related would be the connection between indigenous peoples and the Caribbean as I did not know how many individuals were connected to both the Caribbean culture along with the Indigenous culture as both those cultures were connected through the existence of Caribbean people and Indigenous people living in the same various communities resulting in many mixed individuals along with the support of both communities within each other and for each other.
