Eyes & Ears Activity (20 pts)
Part I: Cow Eye Dissection
Directions:
Work in groups of three.
Gloves must be worn at all times.
Retrieve a cow eye from your instructor and place the eye in a dissection tray.
First, observe the surface of the eye.
o
Identify the cornea (starts clear and becomes opaque), sclera, iris, and pupil.
Next, make a frontal section about 1cm from the margin of the cornea and cut around the eyeball. Be careful not to damage structures inside of the eye.
Separate the anterior and posterior sections of the eye.
Examine the anterior portion of the eye. o
Identify the ciliary body, iris, pupil, and cornea.
Next, remove and observe the lens.
Then, examine the posterior portion of the eye.
o
Identify the retina, choroid, and vitreous humor.
Clean-Up:
The eye should be discarded in the waste bin located inside the fume hood.
The dissecting tray and tools need to be rinsed off and placed on the side table to dry.
