Skeletal System: In the space provided, describe the location for each of the bones
and their features. Using directional terminology, body regions, and how the bones articulate with other bones will be helpful in the descriptions. Describe the fontanels of an infant’s skull: These are the soft spots between the bones of the skull, the spots close with age.
Describe where the following bones of the skull are located
Frontal Located at the top front of the skull, forehead area
Parietal The left and right side of skull above the temporal
Temporal Within the area of the temple, above the ear
Mastoid process at the base of the temporal bone
External auditory meatus located at the beginnings of the ear canal
Occipital Back of the skull
Foramen magnum rear side of skull, big hole in skull that connects it to the spinal cord.
Occipital condyles knob like bones that are on the rear end of skull and connect to the cervical vertebra.
Ethmoid Bone within the eye located on the more medial side, between sphenoid and lacrimal bones
Crista galli located within the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone to projecting above the cribriform plate to the cranial cavity
Sphenoid Located lateral to the ethmoid bone and on the lateral side of eye socket
Sella turcica located in the body of the sphenoid bone
Vomer the tip of nose bone that separates the left and right nasal cavities
Nasal the “nose bridge” bone
Zygomatic Cheek bone Maxilla Bone below nasal and vomer but above mouth, makes up mustache area to up to sides of nose
Palatine process Bone found within mouth that is part of maxilla, on roof of mouth
Palatine. Mandible The jaw bone
TMJ causes pain in jaw and can weaken jaw movement.
Y: anterior cranial fossa- supports large frontal lobes
G: middle cranial fossa- common sight for growth
B: posterior cranial fossa- houses temporal lobe
P: Crista Galli- serves as an attachment to the membrane
Pi: Cribriform Plate- transmits nerves for smell
Grey: sphenoid bones, greater & lesser wing- forms base and lateral
of skull
Use colored pencils to highlight and then label the internal bones and features of the skull
1parietal bone 2 sagittal suture 3lambdoid suture 4occipital bone
Label the bones on the posterior view of the skull
Label the bones of the anterior view of the skull. 1 frontal bone
2glabella
3zygotmatic bone
4vomer
5nasal bone
6 maxilla
7 mandible

More Bones of the Axial Skeleton
Describe the location for the following bones and their features
Hyoid attaches to some ligaments and tendons in neck, doesn’t articulate with any
other bone
Label the bones seen on the lateral view the skull. Use colored pencils to highlight features.
1parietal bone
2coronal suture
3squamous suture
4zygomatic bone
5mandible
6mental foramen
Label the bones of the inferior surface
of the skull. Use colored pencils to highlight features of the bones
1palatine bone
2jugular foramen
3cartoid canal
4occipital bone
5foramen magnum
Label the hyoid bone
Sternum Manubrium Body of sternum Xiphoid process Ribs 1-8 are true 9-10 are false and 11-12 are floating
Label the features of the sternum. Use
colored pencils to highlight each of the features
Cervical vertebrae small bod
Atlas has a posterior and anterior arch
Axis has a dens (head shaped top)
Thoracic vertebrae heart shaped body
Lumbar vertebrae has a large body
Label each of the following vertebrae as either Cervical, Thoracic, or Lumbar. One the Thoracic and Lumbar vertebrae, label the spinous process, transverse process, and body of the vertebrae. Cervical thoracic
