Lab Activity #1

1
The human body is meticulously organized.
The activities in this lab will help you understand this
organization and how anatomists visualize the human body.
This lab also enables you to describe the
human body using the same language as scientists and health professionals.
Human anatomy was
first described only by dissection, but today a variety of tools, including anatomy models, virtual software
(and more) allows students to easily learn about its organization.
As such, you will begin making use
of these tools lab activity #1.
Use table 1 (below) to address questions 1-7 on the following pages.

1. Using your textbook as a reference,
describe
(in your own words) the regions of the body
associated with the following terms:
a. Nuchal—
b. Cervical—
c. Mental—
d. Cranial—
e. Cephalic—
2. The
pollex
and
hallux
are anatomical terms for which body parts?
Lab objectives:
1.
Learn and apply regional anatomical terminology to the human body
2.
Understand the meaning of directional terminology and its appropriate use for explaining relationships
between body structures
3.
Understand the organization of abdominopelvic organs into regions and quadrants
4.
Describe body cavities and major organs associated with each

following anatomical regions located on the upper extremities:
carpal
,
brachial
,
acromial
,
axillary
,
antebrachial
and
palmar
.
4.
Draw a human leg—including the thigh, lower leg and foot—and correctly label the following
anatomical regions located on the lower extremities:
femoral
,
tarsal
,
crural
,
patellar
,
pedal
.
5.
Identify at least four (4) anatomical regions (from the table on page 1) that would be associated
with the
trunk of the body
.
6. Using your textbook as a reference,
describe
(in your own words) the regions of the body
associated with the following terms:
a. Pelvic—
b. Inguinal—
c. Dorsal—
d. Gluteal—
7. Identify at least three (3) anatomical regions (from table 1) that a
podiatrist
would likely
examine, diagnose and/or treat.

Understanding the meaning and appropriate usage of anatomical directions.
Table 2
—Complete the table below by describing the meaning and reference points in the body
ascribed for each directional term.
Using table 1 (page 1) and chapter 1 of a textbook, answer the following questions:
8. The most
proximal
region of the upper limb is called the ________________ region.
9. The most
distal
region of the lower limb is called the ___________________ region.

State the most appropriate
directional term
that describes the position of:
10. The spinal cord relative to the heart. ______________________________
11. The ears relative to the nose. ___________________________________
12. The urinary bladder relative to the intestines. _______________________
13. The diaphragm relative to the liver. _______________________________
14. The skin relative to the muscles. _________________________________
15. The tarsal region relative to the popliteal region. _____________________
16. The mental region relative to the umbilical region. ___________________
17. The stomach relative to the esophagus and small intestine. ____________
18. The brachial region relative to the carpal region. _____________________
19. The hallux relative to the palmar region. ___________________________
Fill in the blanks with the correct anatomical directional terminology (from table 2). In each case:
consider the body in the anatomical position when answering each question.
You will be
responsible for applying directional terminology on the lab practical.

Anatomical planes
29. Identify which anatomical plane (sagittal, frontal or transverse) is the only plane that could not
show:
a. Both the brain and the tongue
b. Both eyes
c. Both the heart and uterus
d. Both the hypogastric and gluteal regions
e. Both kidneys
f.
Both the sternum and vertebral column
Identify the types of anatomical sections that are created of the human brain below.
You will be
responsible for recognizing examples of anatomical planes on the lab practical.
