Learning Plan: Advanced Clinical Concentration Name: Jade Tippins Field instructor: Brittany Peters Task Instructor: Toby Fritz Field Seminar Instructor: Shannon Gillespie Semester : Fall Spring Summer Year: 2023 Agency: Candace Behavioral Health (Youth and Family Alternatives) Competence #1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior. 1.1 Demonstrate professional use of self with client(s). Strategy: The intern will discuss appropriate roles and boundaries regarding interactions with therapeutic clients with my field instructor. Measurement: The intern will receive feedback from their supervisor regarding the appropriateness of their interactions and practice these behaviors. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 1.2 Demonstrate the ability to recognize professional strengths, limitations, and challenges by proactively engaging and collaborating with members of other professions in inter- professional teams. Strategy: The intern will attend weekly staff meetings and discuss social work perspectives and roles regarding cases. Measurement: The intern will observe and analyze different disciplines’ roles and viewpoints with their supervisor. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 1.3 Develop, manage, and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients within the person-in- environment and strengths perspectives. Strategy: The intern will start by building rapport with the client and consider the use of the strength-based perspective to maintain therapeutic relationships. Measurement: The intern will receive guidance from their supervisor on how to maintain therapeutic relationships once rapport is built and will communicate in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 1.4 Apply ethical decision-making skills to issues specific to clinical social work, including practice with advanced technologies. Strategy: The intern will abide by the agency's and NASW’s ethical guidelines regarding confidentially when working with/ discussing clients within the agency. Measurement: The intern will discuss any ethical concerns regarding confidentially and how they relate to the specific clients served at the agency with their supervisor. This will be completed by the end of the semester.
1.5 Communicate professional judgments to other social workers and to professionals from other disciplines, in both verbal and written formats. Strategy: The intern will discuss any professional judgment about how to best impact the clients in a therapeutic setting in the weekly team meeting or during supervision. Measurement: The intern will take notes about what ideas they have during each week of their internship. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #2: Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice. 2.1 Research and apply knowledge of diverse populations to enhance client well-being. Strategy: The intern will understand the many forms of diversity and differences and how these influence the relationship with clients. Measurement: The intern will research and apply knowledge of diverse populations to enhance client well-being. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 2.2 Work effectively with diverse populations. Strategy: The intern will develop an understanding of the effective therapeutic methods for the populations being worked with and apply them to each client that the intern gets to work with. Measurement: The intern will research therapeutic methods that would be effective for populations worked with at Candace as well as communicate with colleagues about methods they implement in their therapy sessions. Discuss these methods/interventions during supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 2.3 Identify and use practitioner/client differences from strengths perspectives . Strategy: The intern will shadow therapists within Candice to assess if they take the differences between the client and the practitioner into consideration however, they do not allow those differences to hinder the therapeutic relationship. Measurement: The intern will report any concerns or praise during supervision and see how the intern can learn from the shadowing experience. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 2.4 Practice ethically with diverse groups, using a cultural humility and social justice practice paradigm. Strategy: The intern will continue to communicate with clients in a professional and culturally sensitive tone/manner. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this through a discussion in supervision about individual interactions with clients the intern works with in order to address any concerns or strengths. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 2.5 Use evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence in advocacy for policies that advance the social, economic, and environmental well-being of diverse populations. Strategy: The intern will be more involved in policy reform and stay up to date on recent policies that are implemented. Measurement: The intern will do this by staying informed about new policies through social media that affect the social welfare realm and advocating on a local level. The intern will also discuss any positive or negative opinions on these policies in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #3: Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice. 3.1 Use knowledge of the effects of oppression, discrimination, and historical trauma on client
and client systems to guide treatment planning and intervention. Strategy: When the intern is faced with diverse client populations the intern will use the learned knowledge of oppression, discrimination, and historical trauma to help the client in appropriate treatment planning and interventions. Measurement: The intern will shadow Candace's therapists to understand how each therapist develops a treatment plan for diverse populations. The intern will also be shadowing the COO to learn more about trauma-informed care. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 3.2 Advocate at the micro, mezzo, and macro level for mental health parity and reduction of health disparities for diverse populations. Strategy: The intern will stay on top of local and federal laws that affect mental health care. Measurement: The intern will use these current laws to advocate for the clients the intern is working with and discuss advocacy for these clients in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 3.3 Actively promote and engage in inter-professional collaborations and co-learning environments that enhance social, environmental, and economic justice for clients at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Strategy: The intern will engage in all interdisciplinary teams within Candace to learn more about each role and apply the knowledge learned to advocate for clients. Measurement: The intern will attend interdisciplinary meetings and take notes based on any questions the intern may have and discuss those questions in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #4: Engage In Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice. 4.1 Use the evidence-based practice process in clinical assessment and intervention with clients. Strategy: The intern will use the information learned throughout past and present classes as well as at their internship to understand the interventions used within their field placement. Measurement: The intern will show this by assessing each client and providing appropriate case plan tasks based on their reason for involvement with case management. This will be discussed during supervision and will be applied to the clinical field. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 4.2 Use research methodology to evaluate clinical practice assessment and intervention with clients. Strategy: The intern will read professional journal articles that are relevant to Candace's therapeutic population. Measurement: The intern will bring findings to the internship supervisor and discuss these interventions in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 4.3 Participate in the generation of new clinical knowledge, through research and practice . Strategy: The intern will keep up to date on new and improved therapeutic approaches and clinical research that is being developed. Measurement: The intern will discuss with colleagues and other social work students about these new interventions to help the intern apply them to the populations served. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #5: Engage in Policy Practice. 5.1 Communicate and educate stakeholders about the implication of policies and policy change

Strategy: The intern will inform other social workers and local policymakers on current policies that impact diverse clients. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by participating in Lobby Day and meeting with legislators to discuss important policy issues that affect the diverse clients served in mental health. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities. 6.1 Develop a culturally responsive therapeutic relationship. Strategy: The intern will be sure to get an understanding of the client's culture before trying to develop a therapeutic relationship. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by asking the client about their ethnicity, race, religion, and economic status at the beginning of the assessment. To understand deeper on how to conduct this in a therapeutic setting the intern will participate in a client intake interview at Candace. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 6.2 Attend to the interpersonal dynamics and cultural and contextual factors that both strengthen and potentially threaten the therapeutic alliance. Strategy: The intern will be sure to understand the different biases and cultural differences identified when working with clients to ensure a professional and culturally sensitive therapeutic relationship. Measurement: The intern will discuss any issues that may arise during shadowing or individual contact with clients in supervision to ensure that the intern's biases or lack of information are not affecting the clients negatively. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 6.3 Establish a relationally based process that encourages clients to be equal participants in the establishment of treatment goals and expected outcomes. Strategy: The intern will allow clients to have an equal say and participate in their treatment plan and goals.
Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by applying it to their case management position and shadowing therapists to see how this is implemented in a therapeutic role. The intern will discuss strengths and weaknesses seen in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities. 7.1 Use multidimensional bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment tools. Strategy: The intern will take part in conducting this assessment on various clients. Measurement: The intern will shadow colleagues to observe an assessment noting formal/informal style, areas of priority, cultural factors, and analysis of meaning regarding the agency mission and scope of practice. The intern will then write up the shadow assessment and discuss it with their supervisor. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.2 Assess clients’ readiness for change. Strategy: The intern will assess clients' readiness for change during the initial assessment in the case management position and clinical position. Measurement: The intern will document the client's readiness to change in their notes and reflect during supervision on what interventions/ treatment is best for the client at that moment. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.3 Assess client coping strategies and capacities within their broader context to reinforce and improve adaption to life situations, circumstances, and events. Strategy: The intern will assess the clients' coping strategies and capacities during the initial assessment to get an idea of how to help them adapt to the change at hand. Measurement: The intern will participate in the initial assessment of a client with a Candace therapist in order to practice the skills of assessing the client's coping skills in a therapeutic setting. The intern will discuss progress in supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.4 Select and modify appropriate intervention strategies based on continuous clinical assessment. Strategy: The intern will adapt to the interventions used within their internship and assess the clients over time to ensure the intern gains confidence in this area. Measurement: The intern will role-play an assessment with their supervisor or colleague and report on areas of confidence and discomfort to gain more confidence. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.5 Use current diagnostic categories in conjunction with scientific evidence and clients’ cultural biopsychosocial spiritual histories to effectively assess client symptoms . Strategy: The intern will use information from biopsychosocial, PHQ-9, and additional trauma-informed assessments to assess client symptoms. Measurement: The intern will observe Candace's therapists to learn what assessments are used initially with the clients and apply that knowledge to future therapeutic practice. The intern will report to their supervisor about what they have learned about each assessment. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.6 Consult with medical professionals as part of the larger practice context to confirm diagnosis and/or to monitor medication in the treatment process. Strategy: The intern will keep a working relationship with the therapists and COO of the agency.
Measurement: The intern will continue to attend interdisciplinary meetings and will express concerns or questions within those meetings to other professionals about client diagnosis/ medications. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.7 Demonstrate the ability to assess client systems using a culturally grounded approach. Strategy : The intern will understand how to gain cultural information before continuing to build the therapeutic relationship. Measurement: The intern will use knowledge from the cultural information to work with a client or client system to develop an intervention plan. The intern will discuss this practice intervention plan with the supervisor during supervision. 7.8 Collect, organize, and interpret health and behavioral health data. Strategy: The intern will keep their HIPPA training in mind and learn Candace's system where they document their sessions. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by comparing their notes and the therapist's notes after the session and observing how the therapist documents their notes in the system. The intern will review notes with their supervisor as well. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 7.9 Utilize current technology systems to collect, organize, and interpret health and behavioral health data. Strategy: The intern will use the technology provided at their internship appropriately to address the well-being of clients through note entry. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by practicing HIPPA-regulated note-taking and following up with their supervisor in order to correct mistakes and gather strengths on their notes. This will be completed by the end of the semester. Competence #8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities. 8.1 Critically evaluate, select, and apply best practices and evidence-based interventions. Strategy: The intern will obtain evidence-based interventions and best practices to use with the clients. Measurement: The intern will demonstrate this by discussing these interventions with colleagues to see which ones apply to the clients they serve. The intern will then discuss interventions during supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 8.2 Demonstrate the use of appropriate clinical techniques for a range of presenting concerns identified in the assessment, including crisis intervention strategies as needed. Strategy: The intern will take part in conducting initial assessments and sessions with therapists and document the session. Measurement: The intern will advocate for clients in need of community services and continue to practice clinical techniques with the therapists and supervisor within supervision. This will be completed by the end of the semester. 8.3 Collaborate with other professionals to coordinate treatment interventions. Strategy: The intern will attend interdisciplinary meetings. Measurement: The intern will discuss and collaborate with other therapists or team members at each meeting in order to gain useful insight into future interventions. Strategy: The intern will use known theories and evaluation methods to improve client interactions and treatment planning. Measurement: The intern will review agreed-upon client contact and file for progress toward mutually agreed-upon goals and stay up to date on what interventions are working and not working.
