CJ 650 - Public Safety Administration Module Four Journal Ethics After reviewing this case study, I believe that Camper has most definitely jeopardized not only her case to move forward with adoption but the reputation of the Icuza Juvenile Probation Office. As an outsider looking into this situation, if it were me, I would believe that although Camper’s intentions were true, Camper took this position with the end goal of adopting at risk children from danger even if it meant bending the rules. Yes, Camper is looking out for the child, while also receiving another child as she mentioned she wants but is also taking away a child from another mother illegally and without the possibility of the original mother getting help and being a better mom to the child. While also making the organization look poor as if their mission is to just take children away from their family even if it is illegal. From an ethical perspective, Camper was not behaving properly. Camper crossed the line and was attempting to shortcut the process. This part of the situation, “The child was having supervised visitation with the biological parents three times a week until five months ago. Camper recommended that the visitation be reduced to once a week. Additionally, the biological mother was attending drug rehabilitation but had missed a few appointments. Rather than meet with the mother and CPS worker, Camper held a hearing with the judge to report the missed appointments and to recommend reduced contact with the child.” (Administration and Management in Criminal Justice) There are policies and procedures in place to make sure all parties are protected, not just the child in the equation. This action from Camper produces a lack
of trust, fear and furthermore no confidence she is making the best decision for children. Maintaining ethics and behavior allows the community to trust you are intelligent in this area of work and know you are looking out for everyone involved. Management As a manager in this situation, Camper should be removed from this case and all further hearings revolving this case. As well as all of Camper’s files will need to be audited to ensure this has not happened before or will happen again in the future with another family. Moving forward there should be a policy in place that requires all employees to submit their case files to a manager for review when regarding court hearings, parental right hearings, and involvement with CPS workers to ensure all legalities are being met and followed properly.
