Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures for the compound diphenhydramine and for the intermediates A and B are to be given, and a possible mechanism is to be given for the last step of the synthesis.

Concept Introduction:

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine which is chiefly used for treating allergies. It contains two phenyl groups. It is also known as Benadryl.

An organic aromatic compound which contains the benzene ring with a substituent formyl group is known as benzaldehyde.

When the reaction takes place between organo-halogen and magnesium in the presence of nitrogen in environment, this type of reaction is called Grignard reaction.

The formula proposed for the Grignard reagent is RMgX, in which R represents the alkyl or aryl group and X represents the halogen.

Amantadine is effective in preventing infections caused by the influenza A virus and in treating established illnesses. It is thought to block a late stage in the assembly of the virus. Amantadine is synthesized by treating 1-bromoadamantane with acetonitrile in sulfuric acid to give N-adamantylacetamide, which is then converted to amantadine. CH,C=N in H,SO, Br NHCCH3 NH2 1-Bromoadamantane Amantadine (a) Propose a mechanism for the transformation in Step 1. (b) Describe experimental conditions to bring about Step 2.
When 1,4-dibromobutane was treated with excess ethanamine at  propanone, the main product had the molecular formula C6H13N. Deduce the structure of this product by proposing a mechanism for the reaction.
(a) How will you convert:(i) Benzene to acetophenone                 (ii) Propanone to 2-Methylpropan-2-ol(b) Give reasons :(i) Electrophilic substitution in benzoic acid takes place at meta position.(ii) Carboxylic acids are higher boiling liquids than aldehydes, ketones and alcohols of comparable molecular masses.(iii) Propanal is more reactive than propanone in nucleophilic addition reactions.
