Concept explainers
Examine the properties of wood, aluminum, and extruded vinyl as they relate to household window frames. Discuss the pros and cons of each, considering cost, ease of manufacture, and aspects of performance, including strength, energy efficiency, thermal expansion and contraction, response to moisture and humidity, durability, rigidity, appearance (the ability to be finished in a variety of colors), ease of maintenance, property changes with low and high extremes of temperature, and any other factor that you feel is important. Which would be your preference for your particular location? Might your preference change if you were located in the dry southwest (Arizona), New England, Alaska, or Hawaii? Can you imagine some means of combining materials to produce windows that might be superior to any single material? Which of the preceding features would apply to residential home siding?

Degarmo's Materials And Processes In Manufacturing
- Please use word writing not handwriting and the best answer for this question: What is anisotrophy? How it affects your engineering design?arrow_forwardd) A common process for the assembly of compound cylinders is thermal shrink- fitting. In your own words, Describe briefly how this procedure may be performed. Explain with reference to solid mechanics concepts, how a thermal shrink-fit can generate forces which hold the cylinders together and enable higher pressure bearing capability (in comparison to a single cylinder). Considering the concepts/principles explained above, describe more generally an alternative method for achieving such improved performance and describe advantages/disadvantages, if any, over a thermal shrink-fitting procedure.
