Explorers in the jungle find an ancient monument in the shape of a large isosceles triangle as shown in Figure P9.25. The monument is made from tens of thousands of small stone blocks of density 3 800 kg/m3. The monument is 15.7 m high and 64.8 m wide at its base and is everywhere 3.60 m thick from front to back. Before the monument was built many years ago, all the stone blocks lay on the ground. How much work did laborers do on the blocks to put them in position while building the entire monument? Note: The gravitational potential energy of an object–Earth system is given by Ug = MgyCM, where M is the total mass of the object and yCM is the elevation of its center of mass above the chosen reference level.

- A block of mass m = 200 g is released from rest at point along the horizontal diameter on the inside of hemispherical bowl of radius R = 30.0 cm, and the surface of the bowl is rough (Fig. P8.23). The blocks speed at point is 1.50 m/s. Figure P8.23 (a) What is its kinetic energy at point ? (b) How much mechanical energy is transformed into internal energy as the block moves from point to point ? (c) Is it possible to determine the coefficient of friction from these results in any simple manner? (d) Explain your answer to part (c).arrow_forwardA trough is 4 m long, 5 m wide, and 2 m deep. - A cylindrical tank, shown in the figure, has height 8 m and radius 4 m. Suppose the water tank is half-full of water. Determine the work required to empty the tank by pumping the water to a level 6 m above the top of the tank. Use 1000 kg/m³ for the density of water and 9.8 m/s² for the acceleration due to gravity. 4 m Draw a y-axis in the vertical direction (parallel to gravity) and choose the center of the bottom of the tank as the origin. Even small changes in the effective area of an artery can lead to very large changes in the blood pressure in the artery and possibly to the collapse of the blood vessel. Imagine a healthy artery, with blood flow velocity of vo equals 0.14 m/s and mass per volume of p = 1050 kg/m³. The kinetic energy per unit volume of blood is given pv². This is one of the terms in Bernoulli's equation. Imagine that plague has narrowed an artery to 1/10 of its normal cross-sectional area, a 90% blockage. 1 2 by ko = a) Compared to normal blood flow velocity, vo, what is the velocity of blood as it passes through this blockage? b) By what factor does the kinetic energy per unit of blood volume change as the blood passes through this blockage? c) Using Bernoulli's equation as the blood passes through this blockage, what happens to the blood pressure?arrow_forward
