It affects many genes coding for sickle cell anemia. The shape of the red blood cells changes and they become crescent shaped. They ability to bind to oxygen decreases in blood. The dominant gene for sickle cell anemia in the genotype is represented by S and the recessive gene in the genotype is represented by s. The depiction for hemoglobin is depicted by Hb and in a cross it can be depicted as HbS for the dominant gene and Hbs for the recessive gene.
