Introduction: The cerebral cortex functions as a combined center for sensory information and for a region of decision making for various types of motor output. The cerebral cortex is classified into three specialized areas: sensory areas, association areas, and motor areas.

Answer to Problem 1RQ
Correct answer: “The ability of human brains to change circuit connections and function in response to sensory input and past experience is known as plasticity”.
Explanation of Solution
The neural connections in the part of the brain called cerebrum, similar to those in other parts of the nervous system reveal a definite degree of plasticity. For example, if one finger of an individual is lost, then the areas of sensory and motor cortex which are previously dedicated to regulating finger do not get slowed down. Alternatively, adjacent areas of the cortex increase their function and acquire those parts of the cortex which are in no more use by the finger that is lost.
