Concept introduction: Fontanels are soft spots in the skull of a human infant. Fontanels consist of soft membranous sutures between the cranial bones, as the bones are not fused at the time of birth. The dense regular connective tissues that connect the cranial bones in an infant skull are referred to as fontanels.
