Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The two main drawbacks of obtaining IR spectra of solids as KBr pellets needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

In a spectrophotometer, the window material is usually potassium bromide which is of spectroscopic grade. The reason being that it is transparent to IR, i.e. Between ranges of 4000 to 400 cm-1. But even potassium bromide obtained from KBr matrix is pressed to form pellet which is then analyzed.
