Chapter 8, Problem 6RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Half-reaction must be defined and how the combination two half-reaction gives a cell reaction must be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously in a chemical reaction often called as redox reactions. Redox reactions in which electron transfer takes place can be used to generate electricity.

An electrochemical cell is device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. An electrochemical cell is used to produce electricity from chemical reactions.

An electrochemical cell consists of two compartments each containing a metal rod known as an electrode which is dipped in solution of the salt of same metal. Electron flow occurs from one electrode to another. At one of the electrodes oxidation occurs and at the other reduction occurs. The electrode where oxidation occurs is known as anode and the electrode where reduction occurs is known as cathode.

The oxidation and reduction reactions occurring at anode and cathode are two half-reactions for an electrochemical cell.
