There are around 31 pairs of spinal nerves which are grouped into 8 cervical, 5 sacral, 5 lumbar, 12 thoracic, and 1 coccygeal. The spinal nerves are grouped in accordance with the portion of the vertebral column from which they arise. The spinal nerve carries sensory, motor, and autonomic signals from the spinal cord to the entire body.
