Chapter 8, Problem 10TYU
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Estimate the value of ∆G (change in Gibbs free energy) for the uncoupled reaction and the two steps in the coupled reaction.

Introduction:

The reactions that are spontaneous and release energy are called exergonic reactions, whereas the reactions that require the input of energy to proceed are endergonic reactions. These reactions are nonspontaneous. The ATP hydrolysis is an exergonic reaction and nearly 7.3 kcal of energy per mole is released during this reaction.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) hydrolysis releases 7.3 kcal of free energy and the ATP hydrolysis is coupled to an endergonic reaction.

The following figure is from Caterina et al. The capsaicin receptor: a heat activated ion channel in the pain pathway. Nature, 1997. Black boxes indicate capsaicin, white circles indicate resinferatoxin. You are a chef in a fancy new science-themed restaurant. You have a recipe that calls for 1 teaspoon of resinferatoxin, but you feel uncomfortable serving foods with "toxins" in them. How much capsaicin could you substitute instead?
