Question
Chapter 7.6, Problem 8E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
This needs to be explained that if one stereocenter of the (+)-tartaric acid has R configuration then the configuration of the other stereocenter is also R.
Concept Introduction :
The stereo isomers having different configuration at all stereocenters are known as enantiomers of each other and if there is different configuration at only one stereocenter but same at other and both isomers are non-mirror image of each other, they will be diastereomers.

Identify pairs of molecules that represent enantiomers and diastereomers and identify each center
stereogenic by writing R or S next to it.
If the two stereogenic centers of a compound are R,S in configuration, what are the R,S assignments for its enantiomer and two diastereomers?
3) Your results should show that S-mandelic acid rotates light to
the right and R-mandelic acid rotates light to the left. Explain
the correlation between the R/S configuration and the direction
to which light is rotated.
4) Interpret the % ee of your unknown sample. How much of
your sample is racemic? How much of your sample is the S
enantiomer? How much of your sample is the R enantiomer?
