Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: To find the molecular formulas of mevalonic acid.

Concept Introduction: Molecular formula is found by multiplying a whole number to the empirical formula. The whole number is found by dividing the molar mass with the empirical formula mass.

To find the empirical formula we first convert the given mass % of each element to grams, and then divide the mass in grams of each element with its respective atomic mass to get moles of each element. The mole of each element is divided by the smallest value of mole. The mole ratio thus obtained is rounded off to the nearest whole number to obtain the simplest ratio. The simplest ratio of each element in the compound gives the empirical formula of the compound.
