Initializing a character array:

While initializing the array of type “char”, it must end with the special character called “null character”.

  • The ASCII value for the null character is “0”.
  • The literal code for the null character is written as “\0”.
  • Normally, each string literal is implicitly ended with the null character.
  • Thus, character arrays helps to store the strings, while initializing the character array with string literal, and then it is must use the null character at the end of allocated space.

For example:

Consider the following code,

char name[] = {‘t’ , ‘o’, ‘m’, ‘\0’}

In the above line, the character array “name[]” is initialized with the characters “t”, “o”, and “m” and ends with the null terminator.
