Interpretation:

The change in pressure drop values due to variable void fraction is to be discussed.

Concept Introduction:

The pressure drop of packed bed depends on superficial velocity, particle diameter and size of packing used. This superficial velocity is the minimum velocity required to allow a pressure drop across a packed bed of known height and packing specifications. For small particles, this pressure drop does not require a sharp transition between the laminar and turbulent flows. Hence, for such cases, Ergun equation suffice such that the pressure drop is thought to be parabolic in nature and with critical velocity term only.
