Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The frictional resistance due to the engagement of the ram in the cylinder is to be calculated.

Concept introduction:

The frictional resistance is the force which inhibits the motion of the fluid/particle through the substance on which it is moving.

The frictional resistance is given as,

  F=τ×A   ……. (1)

F = Frictional resistance

A = Area of the cylinder

  τ = Shear stress developed

The area of the cylinder is given as,

  A=πDiL   ……. (2)

Di = Inside diameter of the cylinder

L = Length of the Ram

The shear stress is given by the Newton’s law of viscosity in which the shear stress is directly proportional to the shear rate and the proportionality constant is viscosity.

The equation governing the above statement is,

  τ=μdudy=μvt   ……. (3)

  μ = Viscosity of the fluid

v = Velocity of the ram

t = Gap width due to ram

The gap width is given as,

  t=Do-Di2   ……. (4)

DO = Outside diameter due to ram

The kinematic viscosity is given as,

  ν=μρ   ……. (5)

The schematic figure below shows a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice with a lattice constant of a. Draw the lattice vectors of a primitive unit cell for the FCC lattice. Also write them in equation form and derive an expression for the reciprocal lattice vectors of an FCC lattice Using these sets of reciprocal lattice vectors, draw (or generate) the reciprocal lattice of FCC in re- ciprocal space. Show that this reciprocal lattice is equivalent to a body-centered cubic lattice with a lattice constant of 4pi/a
