A mitochondrion is the site for generating energy for the cell. It converts fuel particles like sugars into usable energy. A mitochondrion has an outer membrane and a highly folded inner membrane that has increased surface area for breaking the bonds in sugar molecules. This results in production of energy which is stored in the bonds of other molecules and is later used by the cell. Hence, mitochondria are often referred to as the “powerhouses” of cells.
