Concept explainers
To explain:
Plant cell that transport water against force of gravity contain more mitochondria than other plant cell.
Introduction:
Water is an important abiotic factor affecting the life cycle of the plants. It is required for growth, productivity and its availability determines the vegetation distribution. Plants absorb water from the soil with the help of roots. From the roots the water then reaches to different parts of the plant.

Explanation of Solution
The transport of water in plants takes place through the vascular system consisting of xylem and phloem. In plants, transport of water and minerals are unidirectional. When water is transported against gravity, the process is called active transportation. Active transportation requires energy as the water is transported against gravity.
Energy contained in the cell in form of ATP is used in active transport. ATP or Adenosine Tri Phosphate is the energy providing molecules of the cell and is found in the mitochondria. The mitochondria is known as the power house of the cell which breaks down fuel molecules and captures energy. Since the transport of water is against force of gravity, it requires more energy which is provided by the mitochondria.
Thus, a large number of mitochondria are found in that type of plant cells in which active transport of water takes place.
