Summary Introduction

To determine: The group that had the highest total number of brown fat mitochondria per mouse.

Introduction: Triglyceride or triacylglycerol is an ester that derives from the glycerol and three fatty acids. They are the main constituents of the body fat in humans and other animals. Triacylglycerol is seen in the adipocyte cells of the adipose tissue, where the fat is stored. There are two types of tissues that store the fat molecules: white fat and brown fat. White fat generates energy in the form of ATP, and brown fat generates energy as well as heat.

Explanation of Solution

In white fat, the ATP molecule is produced when hydrogen ion passes through ATP synthase. The final acceptor of the electron in the electron transport chain is the oxygen molecule. In brown fat, the mitochondrial inner membrane contains thermogenin and ATP synthase. Therefore, both ATP and heat is produced.

The experiment was performed by Researcher D to know the effect of a high-fat diet on brown fat in mice. The experimental group of mice was maintained on the high-fat diet (HFD) (60% fat) and a control group of mice on a normal diet (ND) (12% fat).

Refer Fig. 7.15 “Effects of a high-fat diet on brown fat” in the question. The group that was given HFD had the highest total number of brown fat mitochondria when compared to the group with ND.

Conclusion

The high-fat diet group had the highest total number of brown fat mitochondria per mouse.
