Concept explainers
You find yourself in the middle of a frozen lake with a surface so slippery
The way to get to the shore in the given situation.
Explanation of Solution
This is according to Newton’s third law which says that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So, if we throw the rock with a force in the opposite direction as an action then rocks also apply force on us in the direction of their movement.
We can understand this with the below free body diagram.
Figure.1
Conclusion:
On a frictionless surface, if anybody wants to move in a certain direction than he/she must throw something in the opposite direction.

What is the maximum possible upward force on the foot due to surface tension of the water? Narrow_forwardYou are quite excited with the lesson in friction that you learned in Physics 1A that you decide to measure the coefficient of kinetic friction of surfaces. You try your idea on a glass surface and a glass cup (mass = 0.15 kg). You set the glass cup moving with an initial speed of 2.8 m/s. After travelling a length of 1 m, it stopped. What then is the coefficient of kinetic friction of the glass-glass surfaces?arrow_forwardA crate of mass m=66.2 kg is on a horizontal surface. Assume there is no friction between the crate and the surface. Two forces with magnitude F=11.2 N are applied to the crate, as shown. One force is horizontal, and the other makes and angle of φ = 37.4∘ with horizontal, as shown. A. Write an expression for the magnitude of the acceleration of the crate in terms of F, m, and φ. B. What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the crate in m/s2?arrow_forward
- Topic: You find yourself trapped in the middle of a large frozen lake. Assume the ice has no friction. All you have on your is warm winter clothing and no way to call/signal for help. You can just barely see the shore in the distance. Use your physics knowledge of Newton's laws to help get you off the lake. Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardYou and four of your friends are all interested in getting out of town for a break. Two of your friends just want to relax while the other two want to get some exercise. You need some quiet time to study. To satisfy everyone, the group decides to spend the day canoeing on the river. Two people will put a canoe in the river and just drift downstream with the 1.5 km/h current. The second pair will begin at the same time as the first from 10. km downstream. They will paddle upstream until the two canoes meet. Since you have been canoeing with these people before, you know that they can paddle at 4.0 km/h in still water. When the two canoes meet, they will come to shore and you should be there to meet them with the picnic lunch. You decide to go to that spot ahead of time so you can study while you wait for your friends. How far from where the drifters launched will you wait for them? After lunch you decide to paddle across the river, which is 0.50 km wide. You can paddle 3.0 km/h in…arrow_forwardBlock A (1 kg) sits on block B (2 kg), which rests on a table. The coefficients of friction between the two blocks are μs=0.5 and μk=0.1. The coefficients of friction between block B and the table are μs=0.7 and μk=0.3. a. If I push horizontally on block B, how hard do I need to push to get it to move?b. If I continue to push with that force on block B after it has begun moving, will block A move with the same acceleration?c. How hard must I push on block B (horizontally) to make block A slip?!arrow_forward
- Two forces act on a 2.90 kg object, the gravitational force and a second, constant force. The object starts from rest and in 1.20 s is displaced (4.10 3.30ĵ) m. Write the second force in unit vector notation. (Enter your answer in kg. m/s². Assume the gravitational force acts in the -ĵ direction.) kg. m/s² Farrow_forward2. Some mice can survive a fall from any height; they do this flattening out their bodies to increase their cross sectional area which acts like a parachute. Model a 20 g mouse as a 4 cm x 9 cm rectangle with a drag coefficient of 1.1, and assume the density of air is 1.2 kg/m³. A. What is the terminal velocity of this mouse? B. Suppose the mouse is falling at 5 m/s. What would be its acceleration at this instant?arrow_forwardThe 50-kg crate is projected along the floor with an initial speed of A m/s at x = 0. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.40. Calculate the time required for the crate to come to rest and the corresponding distance x traveled. A is the last digit of your student number replacing any 0 with 10. For example, if your student number is 400027581 then A = 1, if your student number is 400027580 then A = 10, etc.arrow_forward

The Hornet weighs 40,000 lbf and its twin engines provide a thrust of ~40,000 lbf combined, providing a max acceleration of 1g.a. How long must the deck be to takeoff unassisted? Give the answer in ft. b. This is most likely longer than your typical ~450 ft carrier. What acceleration must you achieve with both the engines and with a catapult system together to reach the required minimum speed by the end of the deck? c. What net force (combined engines and catapult) must be applied to the plane to get the acceleration in b? d.
