Mitochondria are bounded by two membranes: inner and outer membrane. The space between the two membranes is called intermembrane compartment and the space is filled with fluid called mitochondrial matrix. The inner mitochondrial membrane is the site where the proteins of the electron transport system and ATP synthase is present.
