In Figure 6-2a and 6-2b, there is an energy maximum along the reaction coordinate. The structure that corresponds to this energy maximum is the elementary step’s transition state. Because there is a maximum in energy between the reactants and products, an energy barrier must be surmounted to form products. This is true regardless of whether the elementary step is exergonic or endergonic. This energy barrier, called the free energy of activation (ΔG0‡, “delta-G-naughtdouble-dagger”), is the difference in standard free energy between the reactants and the transition state. ΔG0‡ is an important factor that governs reaction rates.
