The maintenance of a machine in a
manufacturing plant currently costs a
company $8,000 every year (paid at the end
of each year) with the cost increasing by
$1,000 each subsequent year. Because of this,
the plant manager is considering replacing
this machine with a newer one which would
cost $20,000 to purchase today, and then
$4,000/year increasing by $30Ó in each year
to maintain (also paid at the end of the year).
If the company's MARR is at 8% per year
compounded annually, what would be the
discounted payback period (in years) for this
proposed investment?

. A construction company is considering two possibilities for warehouse operations. Proposal 1 would require the purchase of a forklift for $5,000 and 500 pallets that cost $5 each. The average life of a pallet is assumed to be 2 years. If the forklift is purchased, the company must hire an operator for $9,000 annually and spend $600 per year on maintenance and operation. The life of the forklift is expected to be 12 years with a $700 salvage value. Alternatively, proposal 2 requires that the company hire 2 men to operate power driven hand trucks at a cost of $7,500 per man. One hand truck will be required at a cost of $900. The hand truck will have a life of 6 years with no salvage value. If the company's minimum attractive rate of return is 12%, which alternative should be selected? Use the annual equivalent method.
NPVs and IRRs for Mutually Exclusive Projects
Davis Industries must choose between a gas-powered and an electric-powered forklift truck for moving materials in its factory. Because both forklifts perform the same function, the firm will choose only one. (They are mutually exclusive investments.) The electric-powered truck will cost more, but it will be less expensive to operate; it will cost $21,500, whereas the gas-powered truck will cost $17,960. The cost of capital that applies to both investments is 13%. The life for both types of truck is estimated to be 6 years, during which time the net cash flows for the electric-powered truck will be $6,860 per year, and those for the gas-powered truck will be $4,600 per year. Annual net cash flows include depreciation expenses. Calculate the NPV and IRR for each type of truck, and decide which to recommend. Do not round intermediate calculations. Round the monetary values to the nearest dollar and percentage values to two decimal places.…

- Delaware Chemicals is considering the installation of a computer process con- trol system in one of its processing plants. This plant is used about 40% of the time, or 3,500 operating hours per year, to produce a proprietary demulsifica- tion chemical; during the remaining 60% of the time, it is used to produce other specialty chemicals. The annual production of the demulsification chemical amounts to 30,000 kilograms per year, and it sells for $15 per kilogram. The proposed computer process control system will cost $65,000 and is expected to provide specific benefits in the production of the demulsification chemical as follows: First, the selling price of the product could be increased by $2 per kilogram because the product would be of higher purity, which translates into better demulsification performance. Second, production volumes would increase by 4,000 kilograms per year as a result of higher reaction yields, without any increase in requirements for raw material quantities or…arrow_forwardA food processing plant consumes 600,000 kW of electric energy annually and pays an average of ₱ 2.00 per kWh. - Please use a financial calculator to solve. Be sure to list your steps. You are evaluating two different silicon wafer milling machines. The Techron I costs $237,000, has a three-year life, and has pretax operating costs of $62, 000 per year. The Techron II costs $ 415,000, has a five - year life, and has pretax operating costs of $ 35,000 per year. For both milling machines, use straight - line depreciation to zero over the project's life and assume a salvage value of $39, 000. If your tax rate is 21 percent and your discount rate is 8 percent, compute the EAC for both machines. (Your answer should be a negative value and indicated by a minus sign.
