The thioglycolate tubes that indicate the requirement of oxygen of the microorganisms growing in them.
Introduction:
Some bacteria are able to grow in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic culture media are available for growing such bacteria. Sodium thioglycolate or reducing media provide special environment to the microbes to protect themselves from the oxygen. The compound named thioglycolate combines with the available oxygen in the media and removes it. The absorbed oxygen from the thioglycolate media is removed using heat. The media is inoculated with anaerobes by stab culture technique.
