Concept explainers
A clothesline always sags a little, even if nothing hangs from it. Explain.
Answer to Problem 1CQ
Explanation of Solution
The clotheslines used for hanging clothes in our day-to-day life, sags little even there is nothing hanging on it even. The clotheslines have some mass concealed in it. This mass interacts with the gravitational pull or gravitational force offered by Earth in downward direction. Due to this downward component of force on the clothesline, the clothesline sags a little. This downward component of force is commonly known as weight of the clothesline.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the clotheslines sag little, even if nothing hangs from it due to the self weight of clothesline.

- Jamal and Dayo are lifting a large chest, weighing 207 lb, by using the two rope handles attached to either side. As they lift and hold it up so that it is motionless, each handle makes a different angle with respect to the vertical side of the chest (Fig. P5.76). If the angle between Jamals handle and the vertical side is 25.0 and the angle between Dayos handle and the vertical side of the chest is 30.0, what are the tensions in each handle?
