Chapter 6, Problem 15PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

The cause of atherosclerosis in mice from the data of graph.

Introduction:

The medical condition in which narrowing of the arteries occurs due to the formation and deposition of plaque inside the arteries is called atherosclerosis. The various risk factors are diabetes, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, family history, and genetic factors. To study the effect of food on heart disease, researchers fed a variety of diets to mice and then examined them for atherosclerosis—the narrowing of arteries that is a leading cause of heart attacks. Note that “causation” means that one event is responsible for the occurrence of the other, while “correlation” means that the two events appear to occur together.

(8) Erythritol has been used for years as a reduced calorie sweetener (non-nutritive sweetener). What type of compound is erythritol? In 2023 a Nature Medicine report was published about the safety of Erythritol This publication generated a brief frenzy of media regarding the safety of artificial sweeteners. Take 5- 10 minutes to review the current literature and provide a brief (50-100 word) assessment on your take of the safety of erythritol as a non-nutritive sweetener (will you continue to consume it or avoid it)? (9) Illustrate (by hand or using software) how soap has been traditionally manufactured via the saponification (base-catalyzed hydrolysis) of fat? No need to show mechanism, simply illustrate what you start with, and what you create via the process. Be sure to identify which ester bonds are to be hydrolyzed in the starting material.

In squirrels and chipmunks, as in humans, cholesterol is removed from the circulation, first by complexing with Low Density Lipoproteins (LDLs). Next, the cholesterol-LDL complex is bound to LDL receptors found predominantly on the surface of liver cells, which then undergo receptor-mediated endocytosis, thus removing the LDL-cholesterol from the blood serum. Inside the cells, a drop in pH causes the LDLs to separate from their receptors, and the receptors are ultimately returned to the cell surface via exocytosis.  You are surprised to discover that in both squirrels and chipmunks, certain individuals are predisposed to suffering heart attacks at an early age, and these early heart attacks are linked to the presence of a mutation in the gene that codes for their LDL receptors.  This is where the similarity ends. Some of the homozygous chipmunks have only the elevated LDL cholesterol levels and the defective receptors, others have elevated LDL-cholesterol, defective receptors, and…
