Your publishing company is about to start a promotional blitz for its new book, Advanced Quantum Mechanics for the Liberal Arts. You have 20 salespeople stationed in Chicago and 15 in Denver. You would like to fly at most 15 into Los Angeles and at most 20 into New York. A round-trip plane flight from Chicago to LA costs $195; from Chicago to New York costs $182; from Denver to LA costs $425; and from Denver to New York costs $166. You want to spend at most $6,330 on plane flights. How many salespeople should you fly from each of Chicago and Denver to each of LA and New York to have the most salespeople on the road? (Enter your answers as a comma-separated list. Let
the number of people from Chicago to LA = x,
the number of people from Chicago to NY = y,
the number of people from Denver to LA = z,
and
the number of people from Denver to NY = w.
Remember that a fraction of a person cannot make the flight!)
2. A sum of $20,000 is invested in three mutual funds. In one year the first fund grew by 5%, the second by 7%, and the third by 10%. Total earnings for the year were $1650. The amount invested in the third fund was four times the amount invested in the first fund.
a. Define your variables.
b. Set up and solve a system of equations using Gaussian Elimination to find the amount invested in each fund.
USA. Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) is one of the great American heroes of
all time. The son and grandson of Africans captured and enslaved, he was
fortunate to have been born free. He inherited the family farm where he worked
hard all of his life. As a child he had a few months of schooling. Everything else
he had to do on his own. He loved mathematics and science but did not get a
chance to learn astronomy until he was in his fifties. Then he performed a near
miracle, learning it all in less than a year. In his hand-written journal, he
recorded two right triangle examples that interested him. You can solve them
here and remember the great man who enjoyed geometry.
On the page in his journal next to the August 1775 astronomy
calculations, Banneker wrote, in the style of that time: Suppose a ladder 60
feet long be placed in a Street so as to reach a window on the one Side 37
feet high, and without moving it at bottom, will reach another window on
the other side of teh Street which is 23…

- ben and harry are friends who both enjoy fishing. One day they begin discussing the quantity of fish in two different lakes that they frequently visit. Based on their experience in fishing in the two lakes, they decide that the two lakes are equivalent in terms of the number of fish. A researcher overhears their conversation and decides to test their conclusion. Using advanced sonar sensing, the researcher counts the actual number of fish in each lake. The researcher finds that one lake has substantially more fish than the other lake does. Assuming that the findings of the researcher reflect the population truth about the two lakes, what type of error did ben and harry make in their judgment – Type I or Type II error? Each year 50% of all trees taller than 5 ft are sold for $50, 20% are sold for $30 and 30% remain in the forest. A. - Donna wants to grow corn on the farm she just bought. The previous farmer grew corn for several decades and kept detailed records of his crop production each year. These records include the amount of sunlight, the amount of rain, the average yield, and other such figures. In an effort to help Donna out, the previous farmer compares his records of using two popular fertilizers: Earthy and SunX. He pulls his records for the 7 seasons he used Earthy on his corn and the records for the 7 seasons that he used SunX on his corn. He uses these records to compare the average corn yield for the 7 seasons that he used Earthy to the average corn yield for the 7 seasons that he used SunX. If applicable, he will recommend the better fertilizer to Donna. (a)First choose whether the procedure described above is an observational study or a designed experiment. You instead take the following approach: you build a taser-net that you can use to stun and catch drones (much more fun than just watching), before tagging them and re-releasing them into the wild. Working for a week, you manage to tag 400 drones, releasing them back into the wild. After waiting a week, you start catching drones again. Catching another 400 drones, you find that 270 of the drones you’ve caught are tagged, meaning you’d caught them before. 130 of your new catch are untagged, meaning this is the first time that you’ve caught them. Assume drones were equally likely to be caught at all times. Before catching the second batch of drones, there were 400 tagged drones in the wild, the rest were untagged. 1) After catching the second batch of drones, what is the smallest number of drones N that might be in the…arrow_forwardWatching all these drones buzz back and forth is giving you eyestrain. But you can’t just count every single drone -how could you ever know that you had caught them all? You instead take the following approach: you build a taser-net that you can use to stun and catch drones (much more fun than just watching), before tagging them and re-releasing them into the wild. Working for a week, you manage to tag 400 drones, releasing them back into the wild. After waiting a week, you start catching drones again. Catching another 400 drones, you find that 270 of the drones you’ve caught are tagged, meaning you’d caught them before. 130 of your new catch are untagged, meaning this is the first time that you’ve caught them. Assume drones were equally likely to be caught at all times. Before catching the second batch of drones, there were400 tagged drones in the wild, the rest were untagged. 1) After catching the second batch of drones, what is the smallest number of drones N that might be in the…arrow_forward
