Farm Fact #3: In 2007, Massachusetts maple producers set 230,000 taps to collect sap, which, after boiling produced 30,000 gallons of maple syrup. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup." And "Suppose the sap is collected in gallon buckets that hang under each tap, and the maple season lasts one month? And "Read the label of a "pancake syrup" bottle to find out how much maple syru it contains." How many gallons of syrup did each tap yleld? How many gallons of sap did each tap yield? What extra information would you need ot estimate the number of sugar maple trees that were tapped? How many times a day (how often) will the buckets of sap need to be emptled? (What fraction of a bottle of generic "pancake syrup" is pure maple syrup?) What fraction of the cost of generic "pancake syrup" can you attribute to the cost of pure maple syrup?
The River is a literary magazine published by the English Department at Tech. It has a 70-year history and enjoys an excellent reputation for providing a literary outlet for aspiring Appalachian writers in particular. However, its sales, mostly through independent bookstores and college libraries, have never been very large. Several years ago, the magazine’s advisory board decided to create a Web site and post the bi-monthly issues online for free access. Due to poor economic conditions and state budget cuts, Tech recently withdrew funding for the magazine, and in order to make up for this financial loss, the magazine’s staff has decided to try to sell advertising (especially to local and regional businesses) on the magazine’s Web site. In order to sell advertising, the magazine’s staff would like to be able to provide potential advertisers with a forecast of the number of “visits” the Web site might receive in future months. Following is the number of monthly visits the Web site has…
The Lawson Fabric Mill Produces five different fabrics. Each fabric can be woven on one or more of the mill’s 36 looms. The sales department’s forecast of demand for the next month is shown in below Table 1, along with data on the selling price per yard, variable cost per yard, and purchase price per yard. The mill operates 24 hours a day and is scheduled for 30 days during the coming month. The mill has two types of looms: draw and regular. The draw looms are more versatile and can be used for all five fabrics. The regular looms can produce only three of the fabrics. The mill has a total of 36 looms: 8 are draw and 28 are regular. The rate of production for each fabric on each type of loom is given in below Table 2. The time required to change over from producing one fabric to another is negligible and does not have to be considered.
The Lawson Fabric Mill satisfies all demand with either its own fabric or fabric purchased from another mill. Fabrics that cannot be woven at the…

- If during the following year it is predicted that each comedy skit will generate 30 thousand and each musical number 20 thousand, find the maximum income for the year. A television program director must schedule comedy skits and musical numbers for prime-time variety shows. Each comedy skit requires 2 hours of rehearsal time, costs 3000, and brings in 20,000 from the shows sponsors. Each musical number requires 1 hour of rehearsal time, costs 6000, and generates 12,000. If 250 hours are available for rehearsal and 600,000 is budgeted for comedy and music, how many segments of each type should be produced to maximize income? Find the maximum income.arrow_forwardSuppose the coal and steel industries form a closed economy. Every $1 produced by the coal industry requires $0.30 of coal and $0.70 of steel. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forward

She creates two groups of 25 students each and gives each group the same sight word flashcards. Group A is assigned to practice with the flashcards for 10 minutes every day for their first semester. Group B is not given this assignment. Each group is tasked with keeping a reading log during their second semester. At the end of 1st grade, Dr. Barton counts how many books each group has read. Group A read 68 books, and Group B read 92 books. - Southwestern University (SWU), a large state college in Stephenville, Texas, enrolls close to 20,000 students. The school is a dominant force in the small city, with more students during fall and spring than permanent residents. Always a football powerhouse, SWU is usually in the top 20 in college football rankings. Since the legendary Phil Flamm was hired as its head coach in 2009 (in hopes of reaching the elusive number 1 ranking), attendance at the five Saturday home games each year increased. Prior to Flamm's arrival, attendance generally averaged 25,000 to 29,000 per game. Season ticket sales bumped up by 10,000 just with the announcement of the new coach's arrival Stephenville and SWU were ready to move to the big time! The immediate issue facing SWU, however, was not NCAA ranking. It was capacity. The existing SWU stadium, built in 1953, has seating for 54,000 fans. The following table indicates attendance at each game for the past 6 years. The supplier can ship every day, every other day, or every third day. There is a penalty of $0.30/cwt for each day delayed. Consolidating shipments allows for lower transportation costs from larger loads, but incurs penalty costs due to the delay. When Line One operates it assembles 30 units of the OLED model and 50 units of the LED model per hour. Line Two assembles 40 units of the OLED model and 40 units of the LED model per hour. Let x be the number of hours that Line One operates and y the number of hours Line Two operates. Phony needs to produce at least 3000 units of the OLED model and 4000 units of the LED model to fill an order. (a) Write down the inequalities that describe the assembly constraints. (b) Graph the feasible region determined by these constraints.arrow_forward
- Andrew's Performance Pizza is a small restaurant in Philadelphia that sells gluten-free pizzas. Andrew's very tiny kitchen has barely enough room for the four ovens in which his workers bake the pizzas. Andrew signed a lease obligating him to pay the rent for the four ovens for the next year. Because of this, and because Andrew's kitchen cannot fit more than four ovens, Andrew cannot change the number of ovens he uses in his production of pizzas in the short run. However, Andrew's decision regarding how many workers to use can vary from week to week because his workers tend to be students. Each Monday, Andrew lets them know how many workers he needs for each day of the week. In the short run, these workers are fixed resources, and the ovens are variable resources. Andrew's daily production schedule is presented in the following table. Fill in the blanks to complete the Marginal Product of Labor column for each worker. Total Product Marginal Product of Labor Number of Workers (Pizzas)…arrow_forwardSouthwest Hospital has an operating room used only for eye surgery. The annual cost of rent, heat, and electricity for the operating room and its equipment is $360,000, and the annual salaries of the people who staff this room total $540,000. Each surgery performed requires the use of $760 worth of medical supplies and drugs. To promote good will, every patient receives a bouquet of flowers the day after surgery. In addition, one-quarter of the patients require dark glasses, which the hospital provides free of charge. It costs the hospital $30 for each bouquet of flowers and $40 for each pair of glasses. The hospital receives a payment of $2000 for each eye operation performed. 1. Identify the revenue per case and the annual fixed and variable costs for running the operating room. 2. How many eye operations must the hospital perform each year in order to break even? 3. Southwest Hospital currently averages about 70 eye operations per month. One of the nurses has just learned about a…arrow_forward
