Purchases You are about to place book orders from McPhearson Imprints and O’Conell Books (see Exercise 32) when you get an e-mail from McPhearson Imprints saying sorry, but they have stopped publishing romance novels because of the global romance crisis and can now offer only packages of 10 horror novels for $50. O’Conell is still offering packages of 10 horror novels and 10 romance novels for $90, and now the U.S. Treasury, in an attempt to bolster the floundering romance industry, is offering its own package of 20 romance novels for $120. Furthermore, Congress, in approving this measure, has passed legislation dictating that at least two thirds of the packages in every order must come from the U.S. Treasury. As before, you wish to obtain at least 5,000 horror novels and 4,000 romance novels at minimum cost. Taking all of this into account, how many packages should you purchase from each supplier? What is the minimum cost?

Egan Electronics contracts with GFI to buy 10,000 chips on an installment contract, with 2,500 chips to be shipped every three months, F.O.B. Hong Kong via Air Express. At the time for the first delivery, GFI delivers only 2,400 chips but explains to Egan that even though the shipment is 4 percent short, the chips are of a higher quality than those specified in the contract and are worth 5 percent more than the contract price. Egan accepts the shipment and pays GFI the contract price. At the time for the second shipment, GFI makes a shipment identical to the first. Egan again accepts and pays for the chips. At the time for the third shipment, GFI ships 2,400 of the same chips, but this time GFI sends them via Hong Kong Air instead of Air Express. While in transit, the chips are destroyed. - Jean Clark is the manager of the Midtown Saveway Grocery Store. She now needs to replenish her supply of strawberries. Her regular supplier can provide as many cases as she wants. However, because these strawberries already are very ripe, she will need to sell them tomorrow and then discard any that remain unsold. Jean estimates that she will be able to sell 10, 11, 12, or 13 cases tomorrow. She can purchase the strawberries for $3 per case and sell them for $8 per case. Jean now needs to decide how many cases to purchase. Jean has checked the store’s records on daily sales of strawberries. On this basis, she estimates that the prior probabilities are 0.2, 0.4, 0.3, and 0.1 for being able to sell 10, 11, 12, and 13 cases of strawberries tomorrow. 4. If Jean is dubious about the accuracy of these prior probabilities and so chooses to ignore them and use the equally likely criterion, how many cases of strawberries should she purchase?
