Chapter 5.3, Problem 1E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:The reason of better recovery from three extraction with 5-mL portions of a solvent as compared to single extraction with 15 mL of solvent needs to be explainedwhen K= 0.5.

Concept Introduction:

A solution is a mixture of solute and solvent. To separate the solute from the solution, different separation methods can be used. Separatory funnel is one of the most common method in which the solution is placed in a separatory funnel and shaken with an immiscible solvent. Solute distributes between both solvents to form two layers. At equilibrium the ratio of concentration of solute is constant in each layer that can be represented by partition coefficient or distribution coefficient. It is the ratio of the concentration of a substance in one medium (C1) to the concentration in a second medium (C2) at equilibrium.

  Kd =  C1C2

How efficient is the extraction of caffeine from tea leaves containing 1.0 g caffeine in 80 ml aqueous extract with two 30-ml portions of dichloromethane over that of a single-step extraction (K at 25°C = 8.36)?
Hexanoic acid was added to an immiscible biphasic solvent system, water and CCl4 at 20.0OC and the equilibrium concentrations of hexanoic acid were determined to be 3.66 g/L in H2O and 67.0 g/L in CCl4. Caluclate the distrubution coeffiecent (D2) of hexanoic acid in water with respect to CCl4.
The distribution constant, Kp, for compound A between toluene and water is 6.35. What is the concentration of compound A remaining in the aqueous phase after 40.0 mL of 0.470 M A is extracted with each quantity of toluene indicated? one 35.0 mL portion: [A]₁ = two 17.5 mL portions: [A]₂= five 7.00 mL portions: [A] = ten 3.50 mL portions: [A] 10 = M M M M
