Concept explainers
A spiral is an ice-skating position in which the skater glides on one foot with the other foot held above hip level. It’s a required element in women’s singles figure skating competition and is related to the arabesque performed in ballet. Figure 5.40 shows skater Sarah Hughes executing a spiral during her gold-medal performance at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

If the skater were to execute the same maneuver but at higher speed, the tilt evident in the photo would be
- a. less.
- b. greater.
- c. unchanged.

- The coefficient of friction between the tires of Shirley's 1985 Ford Coupe and the dry pavement is 0.74. She doesn't drive the car often because it's becoming an antique, but she took it out for a gentle drive yesterday. While driving, she has to suddenly and forcefully brake when the light turned red. She probably shouldn't have been texting and driving! Her car (mass = 1.31x10³ kg) skids to a stop with an acceleration of m/s². Use the approximation g = 10 m/s².arrow_forwardA driver in a car traveling at 23 m/s slams on the brakes and skids to a stop. If the coefficient of friction between the tires and the horizontal road is 0.70, how long will the skid marks be?arrow_forwardThe 60-kg crate is projected along the floor with an initial speed of vo = 6.8 m/s at x = 0. The coefficient of kinetic friction is μk = 0.55. Calculate the time t required for the crate to come to rest and the corresponding distance x traveled. Answers: t = Hk X = i VO S marrow_forward
- correct statements are (a), (b) and (c). How do I solve this?arrow_forwardA ski that is placed on snow will stick to the snow. However, when the ski is moved along the snow, the rubbing warms and partially melts the snow, reducing the coefficient of kinetic friction and promoting sliding.Waxing the ski makes it water repellent and reduces friction with the resulting layer of water. A magazine reports that a new type of plastic ski is especially water repellent and that, on a gentle 200 m slope in the Alps, a skier reduced his top-to-bottom time from 61 s with standard skis to 42 s with the new skis. Determine the magnitude of his average acceleration with (a) the standard skis and (b) the new skis. Assuming a 3.0 slope, compute the coefficient of kinetic friction for (c) the standard skis and (d) the new skisarrow_forwardA driver in a 1000 kg car traveling at 36 m/s slams on the brakes and skids to a stop. If the coefficient of friction between the tires and the horizontal road is 0.80, how long will the skid marks be?arrow_forward
- A box is given a push so that it slides across the floor. How far will it go, given that the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.18 and the push imparts an initial speed of 3.9 m/sm/s ? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.arrow_forwardNeglecting friction, determine the hanging mass may have so that the 100-kg block shown in the figure will neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane.arrow_forwardThe Harrier Jump Jet is a fixed wing military jet designed for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL). It is capable of rotating its jets from a horizontal to a vertical orientation in order to takeoff, land and conduct horizontal maneuvers. Determine the vertical thrust required to accelerate an 8600-kg Harrier upward at 0.40 m/s/s.arrow_forward

If the initial speed of the object of 25 m/s, what of the distance that it will slide before coming to a stop?arrow_forwardEmma and Katie are racing along in their new wagon. Upon reaching the bottom of the hill traveling at 13.2 m/s, Katie notices her teddy bear 12.0 m in front of them, panics and locks the brakes sending the wagon into a skid. If the wagon and its contents have a total mass of 1.50 x10^1 kg, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the road and the rubber wagon tires is (0.75), by how much does the wagon miss the bear?arrow_forwardhelp with attached qnarrow_forward
