Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The activity and activity coefficient of both components in a propanone $\left(\text{P}\right)$/methanol $\left(\text{M}\right)$ solution have to be calculated on the basis of Raoult’s law.

Concept introduction: The effective concentration of solutions is expressed in terms of its activity.  For ideal solutions, the activity is equal to the concentration.  It depends on the factors which affect the chemical potential.  According to Raoult’s law, the partial vapor pressure of a component $\text{A}$ is directly proportional to the mole fraction of liquid $\text{A}$.
