Dalton’s law of partial pressure states that “the total pressure (P) of the mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures (PA, PB, PC.....) of all the component gases (A, B, C......)   present in the mixture” and is given as,

P = PA + PB + PC + .......

The ideal gas law for the individual gas component A is given as,

PAV = nART

Mole fraction:

Mole fraction of a component gas is defined as “the fraction of moles of that component in the total moles of gas mixture” and is given as,

Mole fraction of A = nAn = PAP

To Calculate: The partial pressure of each of the gases from a certain volcano whose total pressure of volcanic gas were 760 mmHg

Given data:

The gas from a certain volcano had the following composition in mole percent (mole fraction×100) : 65.0 % CO2 , 25.0 % H2 , 5.4 % HCl , 2.8 % HF , 1.7 % SO2 and 0.1 % H2S .

The total pressure of volcanic gas were 760 mmHg    

Calculation of Partial Pressure:

On rearranging the mole fraction equation, we get

P(gas) = P×(mole fraction of gas)

The parital pressure of the given volcanic gases are calculated as follows,

Partial pressure of H2 :

P(H2)  = 760 mmHg×0.250 =190.0 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of H2 is 190.0 mmHg

Partial pressure of CO2 :

P(CO2)  = 760 mmHg×0.650 =494.0 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of CO2 is 494 mmHg

Partial pressure of HCl :

P(HCl)  = 760 mmHg×0.054 =41.04 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of HCl is 41 mmHg

Partial pressure of HF :

P(HF)  = 760 mmHg×0.028 =21.28 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of HF is 21 mmHg

Partial pressure of SO2 :

P(SO2)  = 760 mmHg×0.017 =12.92 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of SO2 is 13 mmHg

Partial pressure of H2S :

P(H2S)  = 760 mmHg×0.001 =0.76 mmHg

Therefore, the partial pressure of H2S is 0.8 mmHg
