Interpretation:
The specific rotation of the given chiral compound in the mixture is to be determined and percentage of S enantiomer in that mixture is to be calculated.
Concept introduction:
The ability of racemic mixtures to rotate the plane polarized light is governed by the percentage of the enantiomer which is in excess. If a given mixture is excess in the (+) enantiomer, then the rotation of the plane polarized light will be in (+) direction. The measured rotation is calculated by using the concentration of the solution, the specific rotation of the chiral compound, and the path length of the sample tube. The concentration must be in g/ml, and the length of the tube must be in decimeters.
