Concept introduction:

A molecule with at least two chiral centers having a plane of symmetry is called a meso molecule. An imaginary plane that bisects the molecule into two halves which are mirror images of each other is called as plane of symmetry. The two chiral centers that do not lie on the plane of symmetry must have identical substituents. The meso molecules are achiral.
