Ionic compounds are made up of ions that are bonded by electrostatic forces of attraction. In ionic compounds, cations are defined as the positively charged ions, whereas anions are the negatively charged ions.
An ion is an atom that consists of a positive or negative charge due to addition or removal of electrons. In positively charged ion, removal of electrons takes place, whereas in negatively charged ion, addition of electron takes place.
