Identity the layers of the epidermis.

To identify:
The different layers of the epidermis.
Introduction:
Epidermis is the superficial layer of the skin and it act as a protective covering to the body. It is very rigid, resistant to germs and other infections and also protects inner systems and organs of our body. Epidermis is made up of four layers of epithelial cells which are different in their properties.
Explanation of Solution
The four layers of epidermis are as described as follows:
- 1) Stratum corneum.
- 2) Stratum basale.
- 3) Stratum spinosum and
- 4) Stratum granulosum.
The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and it varies in thickness at various body parts. It contains the dead cells of the body which shed or cast off and resulting in the generation of new cells.
Stratum basale is the innermost layer of the epidermis which is present much deeper inside. The two other layers stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum are present in between the basal and upper layers.
The stratum spinosum is present at the boundary of basale layer which help in adhering other cells; and the stratum granulosum is located just below the corneum layer. The epithelial cells present in this layer contain a waxy substance which is preventing the entry of water inside the skin.
Epidermis is the superficial layer of the skin and it act as a protective covering to the body.
