Explanation In a negative feedback system, the response of an integrator (control system) is negative (opposite) to the output of a sensor that detects a change. This system maintains homeostasis. Typically, the secretion of a hormone is regulated by negative feedback systems. In response to a steady state, a hormone is released and triggers a response that counteracts the changed condition to restore homeostasis. For example, the hypothalamus is stimulated by the low plasma cortisol (hydrocortisone) levels, fear, emotional or physical stress, and pain or cold to secrete corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH stimulates the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to produce cortisol. This cortisol is then released into the plasma. When the concentration of cortisol is increased in the plasma, cortisol produces a negative feedback control on the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary.
