Concept explainers
To explain: Why local cortisone injection in an inflamed joint is preferred over the administration of pill.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume, and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then, the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids are found in humans namely glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein and are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles and influence the immune system.

- Drug X blocks ATP regeneration from ADP and phosphate. How will muscle cells respond to this drug?a. by absorbing ATP from the bloodstreamb. by using ADP as an energy sourcec. by using glycogen as an energy sourced. none of the abovearrow_forwardHardly needed.. 1. Which of the following is a possible way to distinguish between muscle types? A) Skeletal muscle can contract via peristalsis, while smooth muscle cannot. B) Skeletal muscle contraction depends on motor neuron stimulation, while cardiac muscle does not. C) Cardiac muscle cells are syncytial, while smooth muscle cells are not. D) Cardiac muscle contractions are regulated by influxes of calcium, while smooth muscle is not.arrow_forwardWhat is the mechanism possible for sensing muscle damage and triggering repair? Specifically in exercise and building muscle. Write full mechanism at the cellular level.arrow_forward
- Explain three reasons why artificial muscle are made from conductive polymer? Please give details about the type of conductive polymer used for artificial muscle?arrow_forwardgive the basics of a disease and its relationship to a faulty signal transduction pathway. Describe some of these diseases in the table below:arrow_forwardDefine hypertrophy of skeletal muscle. Explain skeletal muscle adaptations to strength training (over time, not acute). What are the mechanisms of action? What hormones are involved? What cell signaling occurs to produce hypertrophy? Identify two principles of resistance training and explain how they contribute to skeletal muscle adaptation. Provide at minimum, two reputable resources to back up your claims.arrow_forward
- a) Through which method of intercellular signaling do motor neurons communicate with muscle fibers? b) Action potentials are an “all or nothing” response, so contraction of muscle fibers downstream of the neuromuscular junction is also an “all or nothing” process. Given that this is the case, briefly describe the two ways that muscles generate varying degrees of forcearrow_forwardFirst, explain how resting membrane potential is established in terms of ion concentration and electric charge. Next, explain the process of neural signal transmission from an alpha motor neuron to the muscle fiber. Do this by explaining how an AP is generated (ions and membrane proteins) at the neuron, how the signal is propagated, what happens at the axon terminal, what happens at the motor endplate, and explain all the molecular events that occur to cause muscle contraction.arrow_forwardPlease helparrow_forward
- E: Using either GPCRs (G-protein couples receptors) or RTKs (Receptor tyrosine kinases), describe: 1. How ligand binding activates the receptor. Ex: which proteins are involved? what changes can occur to the receptor after binding the ligand? 2. A signal transduction pathway that occurs due to the ligand binding (must include a secondary messenger). 3. Any cellular response due to the ligand binding. 4. A way that the signal pathway is regulated.arrow_forwardExplain the reason for each of the four treatments in the RICE approach to muscle injuries?arrow_forwardPlease ASAP. Thank you.arrow_forward
