Chapter 45, Problem 7TYU
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The change of runner’s oxygen consumption if runner wore shoes that prevented the arches from changing shape.

Introduction:

Locomotion in animals needs to be effective in a way so as to reduce the cost of energy spent. R. McNeill Alexander studied the cost-effectiveness of locomotion on human foot and discovered that the arch operates like a spring during running. Alexander proposed the hypothesis that there are large tendons in the lower legs of land animals. For example, the Achilles tendon at the back of your ankle works like a spring during running of animals.

Which of the following statements about movement and locomotion isfalse?a. Terrestrial animals and flying animals expend energy to provide lift.b. Swimming animals expend energy to provide thrust but not lift.c. Flexors and extensors are examples of muscles called agonists.d. Flexors cause bending at a joint.e. Extensors cause straightening of a limb.
You attended a swimming class because it is one of the most popular physical activities in the summer and thought as a positive form of regular exercise while on vacation. Imagine that when swimming the buoyancy of the water allows you to move limbs and joints more easily through their normal range of motion. Describe as many different movements of the joints of the upper and lower limb when swimming in the water.
Why might multiple, small motor units be advantageous over a single large motor unit?   A. They enable finer control over movements.   B. Small motor units contract more rapidly than large motor units.   C. Small motor units have greater capacity for strength improvement.   D. The strength of contraction can be modulated more easily in small motor units.   E. They enable a strong, flexing motion.
